Rep. Jason Petrie 2016-Present Last Updated: 06/09/23 Jason Petrie Bio Representative Jason Petrie represents the 16th House District, which is comprised of Logan and Todd counties and a portion of Christian County. He was first elected in 2016 and is currently serving his fourth term in office. A graduate of Todd County High School, Petrie earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Philosophy from Berea College, a master’s degree in Humanities from Western Kentucky University and a law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law. He has been a practicing attorney since 1998. Petrie chairs the Appropriations and Revenue Committee, which is responsible for compiling the comprehensive budget and crafting revenue policies for the commonwealth. As a result, Petrie serves as an ex officio on all eight Budget Review Subcommittees. During his tenure as Appropriations and Revenue Chair, Petrie has already passed historic tax modernization legislation that sets the state on a path to eliminate the individual income tax, crafted what has been acclaimed as the most fiscally-responsible budget in modern history, and allocated a historic amount of funding for both the state’s public pension funds and the budget reserve trust fund. These efforts have led to landmark job growth, major credit rating upgrades, and a more transparent budget process. Prior to his leadership of House Appropriations and Revenue, Petrie chaired the House Judiciary Committee. He was instrumental in reinforcing existing laws to give greater protections to rape victims and also strongly advocated for tougher penalties for convicted rapists and sex offenders. In 2018, Petrie championed legislation that encourages joint custody and equal parenting time in custody cases after a divorce or separation. This was monumental in ensuring both parents are seen equally in custody cases. Petrie continues to be an active and engaged member of the committee. In addition to his role as State Representative, Petrie is an attorney and has his own general private practice in Elkton. He and his wife Denise reside in Elkton. They attend Dripping Spring Baptist Church and share three children, Nicholas, Nathaniel, and Calista.
